License Journey has updated its platform to reflect the 2026 regulatory changes from the California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS), ensuring that LCSW and LMFT pre-licensees are tracking hours under the most current rules.
What Changed in 2026
7-Year Clock Extension
The BBS has extended the validity period for supervised experience hours and Law & Ethics exam scores from 6 years to 7 years. This gives pre-licensees more flexibility in completing their requirements without the pressure of hours expiring.
This change is particularly significant for pre-licensees who take breaks from accruing hours due to life events, career changes, or moves. The extra year provides a meaningful buffer.
Permanent Video Supervision
Remote video supervision, which was temporarily allowed during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, is now permanent in all practice settings. This is a major change that benefits pre-licensees who work in rural areas, have supervisors in different locations, or simply prefer the flexibility of virtual supervision.
One important requirement: pre-licensees must complete a "Video Conference Appropriateness Assessment" with their supervisor within the first 60 days of beginning supervision. License Journey's platform now includes reminders for this requirement.
