License Journey Introduces Automatic BBS Rule Validation for LCSW and LMFT Hours
Real-time validation catches rule violations as you log, so you never submit invalid hours to the BBS.
License Journey has launched automatic BBS rule validation, a feature that checks every hour entry against California Board of Behavioral Sciences regulations in real time. Pre-licensees are now alerted immediately when a log entry would violate a BBS rule.
The Problem: Invalid Hours You Don't Know About
California BBS rules are complex. Pre-licensees must navigate weekly caps, supervision ratios, category limits, and more — and violations can silently invalidate hours. Many ASWs and AMFTs don't discover problems until they review their logs before submitting their application, sometimes years after the fact.
Common violations include:
- Logging more than 40 hours in a 7-day period
- Missing supervision in a week where hours were logged (making the entire week's hours invalid)
- Exceeding the 10-hour clinical threshold without the required additional supervision (2 total units for ASWs/AMFTs; proportional 1:5 ratio for LMFT trainees)
- Logging more than 6 hours of supervision in a single week
- Exceeding non-clinical hour maximums (1,000 for LCSW, 1,250 for LMFT)
How Automatic Validation Works
When you log an hour entry in License Journey, the system automatically checks it against all applicable BBS rules for your license type (LCSW or LMFT). If the entry would cause a violation, you see an immediate alert explaining the issue and how to fix it.
Rules Validated
- 40-hour weekly cap — flags when a new entry would push you over 40 hours in any 7-day window
- Supervision presence — warns when you log clinical hours in a week without any supervision logged
- 10-hour supervision ratio — alerts when clinical hours exceed 10 without the required additional supervision, tailored to your license type (ASW/AMFT threshold vs. LMFT trainee 1:5 ratio)
- 6-hour supervision maximum — prevents logging more than 6 supervision hours per week
- Category limits — tracks clinical vs. non-clinical hours against BBS maximums
- LMFT relational therapy minimum — monitors progress toward the 500-hour couples/families/children requirement
